5 ways to improve WiFi at home, something everyone can do, and should

Location

The fist step is finding the optimal Location for your WiFi device, and where you are going to use WiFi most.
Imagine that you WiFi device is an big globe where the device is in the center, so you need to place as central as
possible of where you want your WiFi coverage. and place it elevated, especially if your have 2 plans in your house.

Wall also take some of the signal strength, but does depend on the type of wall, concrete walls does lower your signal exponential

WiFi Channel

Choosing the right WiFi channel is important if you live a place where there are a lot of other WiFi network like apartments.

on 2.4 GHZ(B/G/N) you have 11 channels, but you should use channel 1, 6 or 11 and avoid overlapping which will decrease your like the picture below is showing.

With this you can see which channels is the most crowded, and choose the channels with less WiFi hotpots and without overlapping, its better to choose a channels with more networks than some with overlap.

Security on WiFi

Well good security does not make your WiFi faster, but keeps other from using your network which is nice 🙂
Try not to have a simple password, choose one with at least 8 characters and Signs and numbers.

I will not go much into this as most WiFi router setup guides go thru this anyway.

Software updates

Keep your WiFi router up to date with the latest firmware.

This will ensure the best performance, security and maybe add new features.

Most routers can check for new firmwares themselves, or you can check out your products home page to see if there is an update for your device.
